The Jett Building is a wonderful example of turn of the century stone architecture. Many of Baker City's business and residential structures were built from locally-quarried volcanic tuffstone. J.H. Jett, owner of the quarry, founded J.H. Jett Marbleworks, which he headquartered in the Jett Building. Tuffstone's exceptional workability permitted craftsmen to design ornate architectural cornices and other embellishments for buildings, which added greatly to Baker City's unique character. Today, the quarry is owned and operated by a local stonemason who has been instrumental in the restoration of many of the historic district's signficant commercial buildings.
